2010 City Budget
passes – OC Transpo
routes saved –
services maintained
– more paramedics
– taxes to increase
3.77%
At the end of
January, following
months of
deliberations and
public consultation,
City Council passed
a balanced budget
for 2010 that will
see most City
services maintained,
no cuts to OC
Transpo routes,
funding for crime
prevention
maintained, 23 more
paramedics, a new
fire station in
Ottawa west, the
costs of the new
Green Bin recycling
program funded
through taxes, and a
new U-Pass for
50,000 university
students. The City’s
annual operating
expenditures will
amount to $2.3
billion, with a
staff-to-population
ratio that has
remained stable
despite population
growth. The City’s
2010 capital program
will reach nearly
$400 million with
investments in our
roads, watermains
and sewers, and
parks and recreation
facilities, as well
as new buses (37
replacement plus 43
new for expanded
transit services).
In Bay Ward
residents will see
work being done on
Pinecrest Road, on
Pinewood Cres. (from
Richmond Rd. to
Harwood), on Carling
Avenue (from Lincoln
Fields to Corkstown
Road), and a new
sidewalk on
Greenview Avenue. As
well life cycle work
will be done in New
Orchard Park, Barry
Mullen Park, Ruth
Wildgen Park, as
well as at the Ron
Kolbus-Lakeside
Centre, Woodridge
Court Daycare, and
at the Lincoln
Fields Fire Station.
I would like to
thank all those who
participated in this
year’s budget
process, either by
attending my monthly
Bay Ward Community
Council meetings
(first Wednesday of
the month at the Ron
Kolbus-Lakeside
Centre), the public
consultation meeting
on the draft 2010
City Budget (held
last January 14 at
the Ron
Kolbus-Lakeside
Centre), or who
wrote/e-mailed me –
your views were
appreciated!
West Transitway
Extension (Bayshore
to Moodie Dr.) EA
Public Open Houses
Feb. 22 & 24
The West Transitway
Extension from
Bayshore to Moodie
Drive Environmental
Assessment is moving
into its final
stages, with a
preferred corridor
being identified on
mostly MTO lands
along the north side
of the Queensway
between Holly Acres
Road and Moodie
Drive. This corridor
will have little
impact on the NCC
forested lands along
the bike path. Two
public open houses
are being scheduled
– Monday February 22
at the Mlacak Centre
in Kanata and
Wednesday February
24 at Maki House in
Crystal
Beach-Lakeview (both
starting at 6 pm).
Fairlawn Plaza to
get facelift
Last Thursday Feb. 4
some 80 curious
residents crowded
the gym at D. Roy
Kennedy School to
find out what will
happen at Fairlawn
Plaza. The new owner
plans to demolish
the small shops on
the north face of
the building and put
in 2 one-story
retail pads – one at
the corner of
Fairlawn & Carling,
the other on the
west side of the
Carling Ave.
entrance. While the
developer has not
indicated who the
new tenants are,
rumour has it that
an LCBO store may be
coming.
